Juror Scams

The United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island is aware of periodic juror scams that attempt to gain personal information (Social Security Numbers, dates of birth, etc.) through emails or phone calls from individuals claiming to be the United States District Court. The U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island currently sends all requests to complete a juror qualification questionnaire and summonses for jury service by U.S. Mail. If you receive a jury-related communication that you believe to be fraudulent or questionable, please contact the United States District Court Jury Office at (401) 752-7232.

  • Failure to Report for Jury Duty

Title 28 United States Code, Section 1864 (b) states that persons who are summoned to appear for Federal Jury Service and fail to appear may then be ordered to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of court for non-compliance with the court summons. Persons then failing to appear or to show cause for non-appearance may be fined $1000.00 and/or imprisoned for not more than three days and/or be required to perform community service.

    Job Protection

You are protected by Federal Statute, Title 28 U.S.C. Section 1875, from being discharged, intimidated or coerced by your permanent employer because of your Federal Court jury service.   Further information is available from the jury office.

    Electronic Equipment Restrictions

Please note that cellular phones, tablets, cameras, computers, recorders, etc., are not allowed in the Federal Courthouse.  Jurors may use the phone that is available in the Jury Office during their jury service.

    Jury Information system

The automated jury information system for the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island is 401-752-7290. You must call this number after 5 PM, one business day prior to your scheduled appearance for your final reporting instructions.  Since jury empanelments are sometimes cancelled the day before empanelment, we ask jurors to call the automated jury information system the day before their scheduled appearance to avoid any inconvenience to them.  When calling the jury information system, please refer to your nine-digit participant number, which is located under the reporting date and time on your summons.

Please note that if you appear for jury service without calling the above number and your panel was not required to report for service, you will not be paid an attendance fee or be reimbursed for parking and you will still have to appear for jury service as required at a later date.

    Payment for Jury Service

Federal jurors are paid $40 per day for jury service, plus $15 for parking, mileage, and any applicable tolls.

You will receive a reimbursement check at a later date.

    Parking & Transportation

Federal jurors are reimbursed $15 for parking per day by presenting a parking receipt to the Jury Office.  We recommended that you park at the Rhode Island Convention Parking Garage due to its price and proximity to the Federal Courthouse.  You are welcome to use any of the other parking garages and lots near the Federal Courthouse, but they may charge more than the $15 parking reimbursement.

On the day of your jury service, do not park at the parking meters nearby the Federal Courthouse.  Since your jury service will last at least half the day, you will likely receive a ticket if you park at meter.  In addition, you will not be able to leave the Courthouse to add additional money to the meter during your jury service.
Prospective jurors may also use the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) to get to the Federal Courthouse.  Please consult the schedules located at www.ripta.com for more information.
