Despite the government shutdown, the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island will be open for business as usual. On November 19, 2018, the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island approved 23 amendments to the Court's Local Rules.  The amended local rules will become effective on December 1, 2018.  The general order and approved amendments can be found here.

In 2018, the Judicial Conference Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure approved publication of proposed amendments to the following rules:

  • Appellate Rules 35, 40;
  • Bankruptcy Rules 2002, 2004, 8012;
  • Civil Rule 30; and
  • Evidence Rule 404.

The U.S. Marshals and the FBI are alerting the public of several nationwide imposter scams involving individuals claiming to be U.S. marshals, court officers, or other law enforcement officials. They are urging people to report the calls their local FBI office and file a consumer complaint with the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") which has the ability to detect patterns of fraud from the information collected and share that data with law enforcement.
