Criminal Debt Payments on Pay.Gov

The United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island is now accepting criminal debt payments via Pay.gov.  Pay.gov is a secure government website that allows individuals with criminal debt obligations to make those payments electronically.  Pay.gov is managed by the United States Department of the Treasury, Financial Management Services.  Please note that Pay.gov will only accept payments via bank accounts (ACH) or debit cards. Credit card payments are not permitted.  Individuals making payments may elect to create a Pay.gov account to store their payment information, manage payments, and view payment history.

Who can make payments through Pay.gov?

Anyone can make a payment if they have a Bank Account or a Debit Card, and they were sentenced by the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.  (Note: If you were sentenced by another federal district court, and your supervision was transferred to the District of Rhode Island after December 1, 2023, your criminal debt payments are made to the Court that sentenced you.  Please consult that Court's website to see whether they accept payments via Pay.gov.)

What types of payments can be made through Pay.gov?

Criminal debt payments such as Restitution, Fines, Special Assessments, and Other Assessments can be paid through Pay.gov. If you are seeking to pay a fine for petty offenses committed on federal property, please consult the Central Violations Bureau (CVB) section of the Court's website for information on making those payments.  These payments are not made via the Court's Pay.gov criminal debt payment portal.

Do I have to create an account?

No, you do not..  However, users have the option of creating an account to store payment information to make future payments.

Can I make a payment with a Credit Card?

No, you cannot. Only bank account (ACH) or debit card payments are accepted at this time.

What kind of debit cards does Pay.gov accept?

You may use a Mastercard or Visa Debit Card to make a payment.

Can someone make a payment on my behalf?

Yes, third party payments can be made. The payer must have the full criminal case number (e.g., DRIX125CR000000-001) to make a payment on behalf of the person who owes the criminal debt. Before attempting to make a payment on behalf of another person, please ensure that their case is administered by the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island.  (Note: If you were sentenced by another federal district court, and your supervision was transferred to the District of Rhode Island after December 1, 2023, your criminal debt payments would be made to the Court that sentenced you.  Please consult that Court's website to see whether they receive payments via Pay.gov.)

Do I need to know my case number?

Yes, your case number is required to make a payment through Pay.gov. You can find your case number on your Debtor Statement or Payment Coupon that you received from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Please contact the Clerk’s Office at 401-752-7200 (and select the Finance Group option) or email Finance at rid_finance@rid.uscourts.gov if you need assistance with your case number.
